Evaluation session - for new clients

I highly recommend that all clients starting Pilates do the Evaluation Session and a session or 2 on a one to one basis. Pilates exercises are different to other ways of exercising - it is very precise, challenging and demanding and has a language of its own. Clients, time after time, acknowledge that they would never have gotten out of their first 6 weeks of exercises what they did, had they not been for an evaluation.

What does an Evaluation Session entail?
An evaluation session is a one-on-one session the instructor has with a new client and is usually about an hour to 90min long.

The goal of an evaluation session is to

  • evaluate the clients posture and movement patterns
  • evaluate areas of weakness and asymmetry in the clients body
  • understand the client's unique goals in doing pilates
  • help the instructor to understand the client's medical condition(s), previous injuries, surgical history to be able to adjust classes accordingly (safely)
  • allow the client the opportunity to learn basic anatomy of musculature
  • allow the client the opportunity to learn and practice the correct contraction of stabiliser muscles in a setting that is not as fast-paced as a class
  • allow the client to begin to understand the Pilates lingo - what the specific cues actually mean

[During the Eval session, the client does a roughly 30 minute individual class with the instructor practicing the principles taught and getting exposure to the pilates repertoire.]
